Everyone Looks to the Sky</a><br />
No one but me would know that the computer is responding to my playing differently than anticipated. Such is the fun of interactive computer music: you just have to work with it, ride with it, fight it, respond to the moment, change your plans. In this case, the conception of the piece is already so circumscribed that the content of the work is hardly changed, though the form is clearly different&#8211;and maybe more dramatic as a result.</p>

Batak Batak</a><br />
A recent binge of Indonesian music led me to dust off this piece. I never felt I had worked out the sax part enough when the piece was new, which might account for why I shelved it. Revisiting the piece, I discovered very few indications of what I had intended for the sax part&#8211;little more than a scribbled microtonal scale. There&#8217;s clearly still work to do here, but I&#8217;m less bothered than I might have been in the past by the elliptical playing.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a recording of a new piece called <em>Everyone Looks to the Sky</em>.</p>

<p>I made the piece and the recording during my recent residency with David Behrman at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. The work is for any sustaining instrument with computer (here, I&#8217;m playing the soprano saxophone). The computer produces a gradually rising tone that matches the first note of each gesture (see the score below). The result is&#8211;yes, more glissando music&#8211;and a curious kind of interactive piece that always ends the same way.</p>
<p>Here are the juicy bits from the score:</p>
<blockquote><p>Gesture 1<br />
• Play 5 notes in an ascending series, beginning near the lowest note on your instrument.<br />
For a performance lasting 10 mintues, each note should last 7 or many more seconds. Each note should be separated by a rest of approximately 7 or many more seconds&#8211;at a minimum, allow enough time between notes to perceive the computer&#8217;s pitch rising. For longer performances, adjust the durations appropriately.</p>
<p>Gesture 2<br />
• Play 4 notes in an ascending series, beginning on any pitch lower than the last pitch of Gesture 1.<br />
Durations of notes and rests are as in Gesture 1.</p>
<p>Gesture 3<br />
• Play 3 notes in an ascending series, beginning on any pitch lower than the last pitch of Gesture 2.<br />
Durations of notes and rests are as in Gesture 1.</p>
<p>Gesture 4<br />
• Play 2 notes in an ascending series, beginning on any pitch lower than the last pitch of Gesture 3.<br />
Durations of notes and rests are as in Gesture 1.</p>
<p>Gesture 5<br />
• Play 5 or more notes in an ascending series, beginning on any pitch lower than the last pitch of Gesture 4.<br />
Durations of notes and rests are as in Gesture 1, with a few notes or rests lasting shorter than 7 seconds, if desired.<br />
Repeat as needed until the piece ends. The last 4 or more pitches played should be near the highest note on your instrument.</p></blockquote>

<p>Here&#8217;s a great way to spend Saturday night! This will be the first time Matt Weston and I have performed as a duo, and I&#8217;m really excited about playing with such an amazing drummer. Every time we&#8217;ve rehearsed it comes out a little differently, so it should be a fun surprise to hear what happens at Valentine&#8217;s.</p>

<p>Today marks the ten-year anniversary of One 4 One, the live recording of a set I performed at the Arts Center in Troy NY as part of the Impulse/Response series. The album had previously been available via Amie Street (RIP).</p>
<p>One 4 One includes 5 pieces for extended soprano saxophone and computer, and one piece for sipsi and computer. All of the pieces involve some degree of interactivity&#8211;the computer responds to the live instrument, and the performer responds to the computer&#8217;s output&#8211;made possible by custom software written with <a href="http://cycling74.com">Cycling 74</a>&#8216;s Max. The name of the album is a pun on the date, of course, and it also refers to mapping inputs to outputs.</p>

<p><a href="http://metroland.net/guides/2010_best_of/best_of_contents.htm">Metroland&#8217;s Best of the Capital Region for 2010</a> came out last week and I am surprised and pleased to be included as the <a href="http://metroland.typepad.com/blog/2010/07/best-of-arts-entertainment-2010.html">Best Retro-Futurist</a>. Sure, it&#8217;s a made-up category, but it&#8217;s a good fit. Here&#8217;s what they have to say:</p>
<blockquote><p>Composer and instrumentalist Holland Hopson has been a contributor to the region’s avant-garde music scene for the better part of 20 year—whether it’s vocal excursions that meld Gregorian chant and Dada, or soprano sax forays that come pretty close to “straight-up” jazz, the breadth and range of this iconoclast’s musical journey has always been intriguing, albeit way outside of the box. Hopson’s recent blending of traditional tunes (performed with vocals and banjo) and subtle electronics has turned him into one of the area’s most mesmerizing and memorable live performers. Catch him if you can, as his local shows tend to be few and far between.</p></blockquote>
<p>Metroland has identified plenty of other (probably more deserving) best-of recipients including such friends and colleagues as <a href="http://jasoncosco.mosaicglobe.com/">Jason Cosco</a>/Grab Ass Cowboys (Best Noise Wrangler); <a href="http://empac.rpi.edu/">EMPAC</a> (Best Music Curation) &#8212; this ought to read Micah Silver, in my opinion, since he is the Music Curator at EMPAC; <a href="http://www.mediasanctuary.org/">The Sanctuary for Independent Media</a> (Best Activist Community Arts Center); and Emily Zimmerman (Best Emerging Curator).</p>
<p>These accolades come on the heels of a conversation with a friend at the latest show presented by the <a href="http://albanysonicarts.blogspot.com/">Albany Sonic Arts Collective</a>. We were talking about how important it is for a community of artists to receive some recognition from the local press and the concomitant pitfalls of letting it go to your head. A timely conversation for the former and hopefully we&#8217;ll avoid the latter. The ASAC event was a great set of performances, by the way, particularly from Fossils from the Sun (Ray Hare) and Family Battle Snake (Bill Kouligas).</p>

ELI KESZLER AND ASHLEY PAUL.<br />
Keszler is a percussionist/multi-instrumentalist/composer, and Paul plays sax and clarinet. Together their duo is garnering widespread praise for a brand newly released duo LP. Having spent the last 3 years performing all over the northeast, they have developed a unique sound, combining the piercing high pitched resonance of Keszler&#8217;s bowed crotales and cymbals with altissimo sustains and drastic pitch bends of Paul&#8217;s alto saxophone and clarinet. The split tone combinations from these instruments is surprising and overwhelming, creating continuous, multi-layered, dense, shifting harmonics and intense inner-ear sound. Spinning discs, invented resonating metal configurations, bending reed tones, and voice interference carefully blend, creating a wild texture that is both harsh and striking . This is contrasted with Paul&#8217;s guttural string attacks, which meet the rapid-fire movement of Keszler&#8217;s low end bowed cymbals and jittery crash.</p>
<p>PEAKING LIGHTS features husband and wife duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis from Madison, WI. They&#8217;ve played in many other bands, but as Peaking Lights, their music has been described as avant-pop drone psychedelia, and live they are mesmerizing.. A review of their recent LP says, &#8220;Sparks fly in the form of warm fuzz and soft melodies when Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis work through marital bliss. Existing in the open space between the parallel of primordial instinct and the delicate creation, Peaking Lights call on psychedelia’s most potent qualities as it floats through 7 mysterious tracks. &#8220;Imaginary Falcons&#8221; draws from the distorted pop of Wavves and Times New Viking — and in much the same way those entities wrap those garage-based trappings around saccharine pop and beachside lullabyes, Coyes and Dunis work muzzled magic enveloping their Casio tones, monochromatic drones, and blissed-out synth with the power of lo-fi static and bass heavy production. “Silver Tongues, Soft Whispers” rains down like droplets of Quasi; lightly patterned keystrokes given a Hammond B3 treatment in part due to the low frequency in which it is recorded. “New News” is a slow burner; refusing to climax despite a careful build up of white noise squalls and lackadaisical keyboard pokes.  Never do Coyes and Dunis weigh down their at-home operation by trying to cram too much into each track, allowing their minimal DIY to flourish in simplicity rather than drown in excess.</p>
